Histamine antagonists:
Antihistamines such as Diphenhydramine, Hydroxyzine and Cetirizine ( H1- receptor antagonists) are taken on a regular basis to protective effects, lessening or halting attacks. The H2- receptor antagonists such as Cemitidine and Ranitidine control symptoms either prophylactically or by lessening symptoms during an attack. When taken in combination H1- and H2- receptor antagonists have a synergistic effect which is more effective than either treatment alone.
Tricyclic antidepressants:
Tricyclic antidepressants such as Doxepin are also potent H1- and H2- receptor antagonists and may have a role in therapy although side effects limit their use.
Corticosteroids:
During severe attacks Corticosteroids such as Prednisone are sometimes prescribed although extensive side effects are known.
